We have been actively monitoring the H5 Avian Influenza situation as it has spread globally, including now in Australia and South Australia. We are understandably concerned about bird flu and its impact on bird life. Our nature reserves enjoy high levels of bird diversity, particularly waterbirds and migratory birds at Murbpook and Watchalunga. Witchelina Nature Reserve is also experiencing significant numbers of water dependent and migratory birds in response to the high rainfall experienced earlier this year.

A key aim of our work is to increase ecosystem resilience and manage native landscapes effectively. Our focus on reserve management, biodiversity monitoring, and team training helps us to prepare for situations like this.

At this stage, no affected birds or animals have been detected on any of our nature reserves. We have increased the monitoring of general bird health across the reserve network, and we are keeping abreast of the state government advice updates and will assist where we can. If any unwell or deceased birds are found in any of the nature reserves, we will follow PIRSA guidelines to avoid, record, and report.
