Since 2022, Nature Foundation have been revegetating the precious Iron-grass grassland at Tiliqua Nature Reserve, whose habitat provides home for three threatened native species, including the endangered Pygmy Bluetongue Lizard.

The Iron-grass Natural Temperate Grassland of South Australia is listed nationally as a critically endangered ecological community under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation (EPBC) Act (1999). The spiky, tussock-like appearance of Iron-grass and its long lifespan make it a significant habitat feature in native grasslands. Iron-grass (Lomandra multiflora ssp. dura, Lomandra densiflora and Lomandra effusa) is a crucial element in the restoration of Tiliqua Nature Reserve's native grassland, where its deep root system helps to stabilise the soil. The plants themselves act as seed traps, which can support higher floral biodiversity.

For this planting day, we have 300 Iron-grass plants to get in the ground, thanks to funding through a grant from the Waterloo Windfarm Community Enterprise Foundation.

This is a great opportunity to not only visit one of our nature reserves, but take part in practical conservation action with like-minded people, and learn about the importance of Iron-grass grasslands, and the work Nature Foundation is doing to conserve this critically endangered ecological community.
